And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting (Mark 9:28-29 KJV)

The power of hell is effortlessly terminated when our faith is anchored to spiritual realities One of these realities however is fasting. Many times people do it out of a religious mindset, they lose weight with their stomach growling but this exercise in itself has proven not to be enough to deliver God’s power.

Fasting unfortunately has become a religious vocabulary among many Christians, whereas fasting is an opportunity to enlarge one’s capacity for faith. It’s a ground for great faith. Although, faith comes by hearing, not by fasting but fasting in itself opens our spirit to receive more faith. During a fast, our spirit is more sensitive to God’s word which is the vehicle of faith, hence the more we fast, the more our faith grows. More faith is a guarantee when the word of God penetrates the core of our being especially in fasting, real fast kills the life in the flesh causing us to lay hold on the supernatural.

After their inability to drive out the evil spirit from the boy in our text, the disciples were ashamed of themselves, they seemed to have failed in ministry. After considering the amount of time they had spent in praying, study, worship and even following the Master, they were confused and frustrated about faith, they sincerely needed to know what went wrong, why couldn’t we heal the boy?, they asked.

Are you at this stage in your spiritual life? Are you questioning why there are no miracles in your life despite your weekly long hours of prayer, worship, study and evangelism class? Well here is what is wrong. Jesus answered them and said- it’s not that you didn’t pray right or study well folks, but this “kind” or this “diversity” of spirit won’t come out simply by prayer, it would require fasting. You see, fasting is beyond 21 days of glory, it’s the ground to develop a great faith that can withstand a “kind” or “diversity” of demonic spirit and the circumstances and challenges they bring.

Isn’t it ridiculous to pray with the same level of faith against issues higher than our present level of faith? The result is predictable: we are unable to do it! Prayer alone could not heal this boy, but when fasting is added, the disciples would have put themselves in the position to cast it out effortlessly. The immovable issues of our lives only succumb to a faith springing from a higher realm called fasting. It is noteworthy however that fasting doesn’t change God but so is prayer, hence the idea of practicing one without the other especially during a special prayer and fasting observance is religious. Jesus didn’t say, all you need to do is fast, no! He said what you need to do is fast and pray, it goes together.

People, often ask me, how do I get my fire back pastor?, I have lost my fire pastor, I keep getting drawn to things I shouldn’t. They think all they need is prayer, they fail to realize that when prayer won’t cast out the “this kind” then it’s time to fast and shut down that spirit. Fasting strengthens our spirit to receive faith, it subdues the desires of flesh, it causes the flesh to lose ground and our spirit to gain ground. It’s time to fast with this knowledge, cast out the ” those kinds” in your life by adding fasting to your prayer in faith that God (not your fasting nor praying ) is able to do exceedingly in you through the power that works in you (Ephesians 3:20).

Rhema word: Do deeper , go higher, “this kind” won’t leave until you mix fasting with your praying
Confession: I receive the ability to fast and put my flesh under, I am strengthened for long suffering, like never before. I cast out devils, tread upon snakes and scorpions and I overcome all the power of the enemy by the Spirit of God in me in Jesus’ name. Amen.
